A typical Victorian tumbler is a drinking glass that comes with a colored bowl and a clear stem. It became well-known during the end of the 19th century. This was especially designed for white wine since this was very favored during the Victorian era. The favorite colors of the people back then were cranberry, blue, and green so you’ll see many Victorian drinking glasses in these colors at auctions.

Knowing Your Victorian Tumbler

A Victorian tumbler can come in different shapes, sizes, and colors for extravagant dining. Historians estimated that there should be around 25 different types of stemware to be considered fitting for a wealthy woman, reserving at least eight of them for guests. If you carefully calculate, having many collections of these require a pretty large house.

If you’re planning on shopping for this type of glasses, it’s important that you’re aware that this period’s glasses have big and wide bases. Bases can be as large as the bowl or larger. Be careful that you always check the bases because there are glasses with small bases clearly indicating that they’re fakes. Although there are authentic Victorian wine glasses with smaller bases, but this is because it had been fixed. This may not apply to all the glasses; this is why you have to really know what you’re getting.

A Victorian tumbler only comes in few sizes. The usual red wine vessel is between 6 to 9 ounces. A ball – shaped glass ranges from 10 to 12 ounces. Lastly, the white wine vessel is generally smaller ranging from 4 to 6 ounces. The glasses were purposely designed in these sizes for certain functions. For example, the bowl of the white wine glass is smaller to keep hands away from it to avoid it from getting warm. White wine is always preferred to be served cold.

When you plan on collecting Victorian glasses, there are varieties that you can choose from. You’ll just have to know how to compare the real one from the fake one. Now that you have a pretty good idea, you can start shopping for your favorite Victorian tumbler.
